Jason Momoa Explains Why He Shaved His Beloved Beard

Jason Momoa fans lost their damn minds when the Aquaman star shaved his beard last month, but it turns out he had a pretty good reason for doing so. In a video posted to YouTube, Jason told viewers his first shave since 2012 happened because “plastics are killing our planet” and he wanted to use the headline-making moment to call attention to that fact. This week, he appeared on The Ellen Show to further explain his involvement with ending single-use plastics—and to tell people his original plan for shaving off his beard.

As it happens, Jason wanted to have Ellen shave it off on her show, but they couldn’t get their schedules to line up in between his projects (hence how the video in the desert came to be). He still wanted to appear on her show, though, to bring awareness to the cause and to show viewers Mana Nalu.

“I just wanted to bring awareness,” he told Ellen of shaving his beard. “I’m Aquaman and I have all these beautiful little kids coming up to me. I want to save the planet from single-use plastics.”

The aluminum cans he made are able to be recycled in as little as 60 days, whereas plastic water bottles wind up in a landfill—upwards of 500 billion a year, Jason says. “I wanted to put an option out there so people can use canned water.”

During the interview, Jason also did a little ax-throwing to raise money—$31,000 total!—for Sustainable Coastlines Hawaii. He posted a video of the activity to Instagram and shared more details about the project in the caption. The cans will hopefully be available by the fall and will come in spring, still, sparkling, and alkaline versions.
