Sports presenter Alex Scott, 36, has taken to Twitter to apologise for her Olympics 2020 coverage error, after incorrectly branding Team GB “Team England”. The former Arsenal football player said that she “let herself down” with the blunder, which saw one social media user ask her to use the correct terminology which encompasses the whole of the nation and not just one of the four countries.

In view of her 333,000 followers, the star said that she “let herself down” after her gaffe, which saw her address the UK team as “Team England” and not Team GB.
She wrote: “Nearly got through the whole show without doing it once and then I bl**dy let myself down #doh.
“My bad my bad… slip of the tounge #sorry,” she added.
The former professional footballer also added a gif of Boo from Pixar film Monsters Inc, with the word “sorry” on the post.
The sporting star’s apology came after a fan called her out for her incorrect branding of the UK squad.
Tagging the host, they wrote: “@AlexScott Just a reminder, it’s Team GB, not England.
“I know it’s just habit, but it is a pet hate of us non-English, especially when you’ve all rightly highlighted Scotland’s Kim Little for her performance. Thanks!” they added.
Following Alex’s post, the social media user said that they accepted her apology.
“Understandable and forgivable. Keep up the good work!” they wrote.
Days ago the sporting personality revealed that she will be commentating for FIFA 2022.
Announcing the news on Twitter, she wrote: “This is a big moment for FIFA, for football and women and girls across the world.
“It’s also a big moment for me personally and professionally.”
She continued: “Whilst I am the first English-speaking female broadcaster to feature in FIFA, I will certainly not be the last.
“I know this is just the start of stronger female footballing representation from @EASPORTSFIFA and the football community as a whole…” she finished her post.
Alex is joining the BBC team as they present the Tokyo 2020 Olympics.
Due to the coronavirus pandemic, the broadcaster will not have a studio in Japan, but will instead cover the sporting events from their Salford base.
Alex, who represented Team GB at London 2012, is a regular face on the BBC and Sky Sports after retiring from professional football in 2018.
She will join the likes of JJ Chalmers, Clare Balding, Gabby Logan, Samantha Quek, and Hazel Irvine who will all be covering the games.
The former footballer is also set to take over from presenter Dan Walker on Football Focus next season, after he announced his departure from the show after 12 years.
The Olympic Games Tokyo 2020 takes place from today to August 8 and will be available to watch on BBC TV, BBC iPlayer, radio and online.
