Call The Midwife star Daniel Laurie forced to quit school after horrific bullying

Call The Midwife’s Daniel Laurie has revealed that he was bullied so severely when younger that he was forced to leave school.

The actor, 27, first joined the hit BBC series back in 2017 as Reggie Jackson and has now spoken openly about the difficulties he faced in school and how they directly led to his acting career.

Daniel, who has Down’s syndrome, told the Mirror: “I hated school. I was badly bullied and that made me walk out of school, but because of that, acting found me when I was 17."

He continued: "Luckily my mum Jane [Laurie] found an acting career for me, she was an actress."

Daniel added about joining Call The Midwife: "If it wasn’t for Call The Midwife, where else would I be? The whole entire show is run by women and I actually love being in Call The Midwife because of them, they make the show what it is. It’s a fantastic show. I love being in the show. We have all been bonded."

And Daniel's not the only famous member in his family as his father is none other than the late EastEnders star, Leslie Grantham.

Leslie, who passed away aged 71 on 15 June 2018 after a battle with lung cancer, played "Dirty Den" Watts on the BBC One soap.

Outside of the popular BBC show, Daniel has worked with some of the UK’s best talent, including Gavin and Stacey’s Ruth Jones.

Daniel’s first professional gig was in 2016 when he was cast as Jamie in the Sky One drama Stella, which was written by Ruth.

In 2020, Daniel also starred in an episode of Vera as Adam Beecher and also portrayed the character of Sheemie in The Dark Tower.

Just a year later, he appeared as Zach in the ITV drama Finding Alice alongside the likes of Keeley Hawes, Nigel Havers, and Joanna Lumley.

This year, Daniel was nominated for a TV choice award where he faced off against the likes of Bridgerton’s Jonathan Bailey, Cillian Murphy for Peaky Blinders, and Ben Whishaw for his work on This is Going To Hurt.

The official Call The Midwife Facebook page could not be happier for Daniel, as they wrote: “The greatest news of all is that our brilliant Daniel Laurie, who plays Reggie, has made it into the Best Actor category!!!"

"This is an INCREDIBLE achievement – as he is now competing with none other than Ben Whishaw, Jonathan Bailey and Cillian Murphy!!"

Sadly, Daniel lost out on the award to Cillian, though he dubbed it an “honour” to be nominated.

He wrote: "Thank you to everyone for voting for me – it is an awesome honour. It makes me feel alive."
