GBBO host Matt Lucas quits as he tells fans it became clear he couldnt continue

Comedian Matt Lucas has revealed that he is stepping away from hosting The Great British Bake Off, calling his time on the show a "delicious experience."

Matt, who fans are used to seeing opposite the show's other host, Noel Fielding, will not be continuing with the job due to scheduling commitments.

The former Doctor Who actor has signed onto a rebooted Fantasy Football League with Sky alongside fellow comedian Elis James.

Taking to Twitter, the 48 year old wrote: "Farewell Bake Off! It's been a delicious experience and I can't imagine a more fun way of spending my summers.

"But it's become clear to me that I can't present both Fantasy Football League and Bake Off alongside all my other projects.

"So, after three series and 51 episodes, I am cheerfully passing the baguette on to someone else.

"I would like to give my warmest thanks and gratitude to everyone at Love Productions and Channel 4 and to Noelipops, Paul, Dame Prue, the crew and, of course, the wonderful bakers for welcoming me into the tent.

"I wish whoever takes over the very best and I can't wait to tune into the next series without already knowing who won!"

Reacting to the sad news, Matt's co-star Prue Leith wrote: I have absolutely loved working with you @RealMattLucas. Thank you for bringing so much laughter and fun to the tent. x Prue."

In response, Matt said: "Thank you Dame Prue. I had a blast. Will miss dancing with you in the make up trailer. xxxx"

"You will be missed @RealMattLucas, good luck with everything you’ve got planned … you’ve been awesome xx," wrote Paul Hollywood, while Bake Off's official Twitter account added, "We've loved having Matt Lucas brighten up our Tent for the last three years, especially when laughter and smiles were so much in need."

They continued: "We appreciate everything he's done for Bake Off, from working in covid bubbles to supporting the bakers. It's been a pleasure – thanks Matt."

Fans seem to be heartbroken by the revelation, as one penned: "What a night. I was never a massive Matt fan prior (just not a type of comedy I love) but I loved him on this show. Thought him and Noel were an excellent pairing. They’ll do well to replace him of equal standing."

"No Matt no!!! (but seriously good luck in your future endeavours)," another said.

While Matt's replacement is yet to be announced, they certainly have some big shoes to fill.
