Idris Elba, 48, has admitted he used to urge his now-wife Sabrina Elba, 33, to end their relationship when she questioned his “tantrums” in the early days of their romance. The Luther actor explained he went through a tough period of feeling “stressed” when their relationship was still relatively new.

Addressing the difficult moments on the pair’s new podcast Coupledom, Idris said he would tell Sabrina to “leave” if she couldn’t deal with his anger.

The star said: ‘Sabrina and I, very early in our relationship I was very stressed so I had these massive anger tantrums that were like explosions.

“She was like, ‘Who are you?’

“I was always the first to say, ‘Hey, if you’re not happy, leave. Move.’

“It was kind of like a male instinct,” Idris admitted.

Idris went on to share that he and Sabrina sometimes clash because they have “strong personalities” in common.

However, the actor added that he is now working harder on avoiding spats with his other half.

He continued: “Sabrina and I both have strong personalities and typically it’s Sabrina who says, ‘Look, I don’t want to fight’.

“I’ve been getting better at it recently but when I do it, I get nothing back.

“When she does it, I go, ‘Thank you’.”

Opening up about how their relationship has coped during the coronavirus pandemic and several lockdowns, Idris said: “I’d say we’re in a good place.

“It was a challenging year, but ultimately, when you look to the side and you’ve got someone that’s been there, ride or die, that’s really comforting.”

Idris and Sabrina tied the knot in April 2019 after dating for two years.

The couple first met in 2017 at a jazz bar in Vancouver, Canada.

Idris wasn’t keen on the idea of getting married again after two previous marriages until he  “fell head over heels” for Sabrina.

He gushed to People magazine: “We started dating and I fell head over heels.

“Everyone was like, ‘Hey man, you seem so much happier.’

“I didn’t realise I was, but the truth is that it really sparked a lot of conversations around how a partnership can bring out the best in you.”

Sabrina has said their marriage is “forever growing and changing and evolving”.

Discussing how the model changed his views on marriage, Idris said: “Sabrina has deepened friendships with people I’ve known longer than [her], nurturing the best side of me to make me connect to my friends more.”
