Rihanna Slams Alabama Abortion Ban

Superstar Rihanna recently took to social media to raise her voice against the Alabama Human Life Protection Act, which was signed into law by the state’s 74-year-old female governor Kay Ivey earlier this week.

“Take a look. these are the idiots making decisions for WOMEN in America. Governor Kay Ivey…SHAME ON YOU,” Ri-Ri wrote alongside a collage of the all-white, all-male group Republican state senators who voted in favor of the bill.

The newly passed law bans virtually all abortions in the state and punishes doctors who perform abortions with up to 99 years in prison.

“Today, I signed into law the Alabama Human Life Protection Act. To the bill’s many supporters, this legislation stands as a powerful testament to Alabamians’ deeply held belief that every life is precious & that every life is a sacred gift from God,” tweeted Ivey.

The approval of the bill by Alabama lawmakers is the latest in a series of anti-abortion laws enacted by conservative states.

With President Donald Trump appointing two staunch conservatives to the U.S. Supreme Court, pro-life groups are hopeful the new laws will spark legal fights that eventually lead the court to overturn the landmark Roe v. Wade decision.

“These statehouses are waging all-out war on women and their right to control their reproductive decisions. This is awful,” tweeted John Legend.

Other stars who have spoken out against the act include Lady Gaga, Janelle Monáe and Kacey Musgraves.
