Robert Downey Jr looks completely unrecognisable on movie set as he rocks ginger curls

Robert Downey Jr looked almost unrecognisable as he was spotted filming the upcoming series The Sympathiser in LA.

The Iron Man star, 57, looked worlds away from his usual chiselled look as he sported thin ginger curls and eyebrows, complete with a receding hairline.

Photos from set have left fans shocked, with the actor donning a pink shirt, burgundy jacket and a pair of blue trousers.

The new look his for is role in The Sympathiser for HBO and A24. The series is based on Viet Thanh Nguyen’s Pulitzer Prize-winning novel of the same name.

The story has been described as as an “espionage thriller and cross-culture satire” following a half-French, half-Vietnamese communist spy in the final days of the Vietnam War.

Robert will be joined by Hoa Xuande, Fred Nguyen Khan, Toan Le, Vy Le and Alan Trong in the thriller-satire series.

BAFTA winning director Park Chan-wook and Don McKellar will serve as the show's showrunners, and will produce the series alongside RDJ.

RDJ previously left fans shocked when he arrived at the 13th Governors Awards in November having completely shaved his head.

While the new look may have been a surprise many of the actor's fans took to Twitter to heap praise on him for his bold decision to shave his head.

One impressed viewer took to Twitter to defence the actor after photos of the event began to spread online, writing: "I'm game to defend Robert Downey jr's bald head anyday".

"Can we take a moment to appreciate Robert Downey Jr's bald transformation?" another wrote.

"I honestly see it and think it could be great. RDJ would make a GREAT villain," added another fan.

Despite this, some fans appeared to be somewhat sceptical as to whether Robert's new look suits him, with one teasing: "just saw a very bald robert downey jr and i’m never recovering from it".

"Bald Robert Downey jr look so goofy," another continued.

A third added: "I hope this is for a movie roll. If not, someone needs to tell him he looks better with hair!"

Explaining why he was shaving his head, Robert had previously shared clip showing his children Exton, 10, and Avri, eight shaving his head ahead of Halloween.

Posting the clip to Instagram, he penned the caption: "The things we do for our work… and our kids. #Sympathizer set ready."
