Robert Pattinson Explains Why He'll Never Hit 'Twilight' Status Again
The name Robert Pattinson is synonymous with Edward Cullen and the Twilight saga. Though the franchise is what launched Pattinson into the spotlight, he has a few reservations about what roles he’ll do from now on, and how that mass hysteria changed his views on fame.

Though details for The Batman are few and far between, Pattison is training for the leading role with a healthy amount of disbelief.
“It’s kind of insane,” he told Esquire U.K. “I was so far away from ever thinking it was a realistic prospect. I literally do not understand how I’ve got it, at all.”
He continued adding, “It’s much more fun when you’re an underdog. There’s no expectation of you.”
Earlier this year, Pattinson spoke with Hustlers star Jennifer Lopez for Variety‘s “Actors on Actors” series where he said the role wouldn’t let him go.
“With Batman, there was something – I was very focused on it. It kept coming back into my head,” he told Lopez.
“I was interested in it. I don’t know what it is, what happened inside of me, but I was like, ‘I kind of want to do it.’ I like doing something which an audience doesn’t know that it wants, and try to get it out of them, ‘Oh yeah, you want to play Batman.’”
The Batman will feature a lot of heavy-hitters including Paul Dano as the Riddler, Zoe Kravitz as Catwoman, Colin Farrell as the Penguin, and John Turturro as mafia boss Carmine Falcone.

While preparing for the Matt Reeves-directed superhero film, Pattinson spoke with Willie Geist in an interview for TODAY. He admitted to hoping The Batman won’t garner him the same level of celebrity that the Twilight franchise did.
“There’s a part of me that just thinks it’s impossible to be what happened with Twilight because it was so sudden,” he said. “I’m hoping it won’t be people hanging out outside my place. I just think I’m kind of boring and old now.”
Boring an old? Plenty of fans won’t agree, but Pattinson confessed to struggling with his immediate and intense superstardom after the first film’s release in 2008.
“I definitely feel like I need to prove something and I’m not entirely sure what it is,” he said. “So that’s probably what my turmoil is.”
What else does Pattinson have up his sleeve?
Since he admitted to wanting to keep his audience on their toes, Pattinson may have a few more surprises in store. One glance at his IMDb page reveals that, since his 2012 departure from the Twilight saga, he’s kept busy in mostly low-key and surprising roles that don’t necessarily bend to expectations.
“Rob definitely has a darker side and is comfortable working in that space,” director of The Lighthouse, Robert Eggers, said. “And he has good taste in cinema. I think a lot of directors he likes are doing stuff that isn’t run-of-the-mill Hollywood.”
Pattinson agrees. In an interview with Variety he said after the Twilight madness, he became more attached to “under-the-radar characters.”
“Big movies, generally the parts aren’t as interesting — at least the stuff that was coming my way,” he said.
With The Batman confirmed, it looks like that may all change, at least for a while. Whether the same level of hysteria comes from it, still remains to be seen.
