Wanda Sykes touts authenticity in storytelling at LA panel

Authenticity is the key to hitting the “sweet spot,” according to comic Wanda Sykes.

“When you tell a story that is not authentic, it’s like you are trying to appeal to everyone and you end up appealing to no one. When you start with a real story and touch on things that people are talking about at their kitchen tables, that’s when you get the sweet spot,” Sykes shared at a panel for Refinery29’s 29Rooms artistic experience in LA.

It was the women’s lifestyle publisher’s first event since Vice Media acquired it last month. The event celebrated black women in Hollywood and included a performance by Republic Records rapper Kash Doll.
