Doctors said I was HIV positive and then my boyfriend left me – later I was told they'd got my diagnosis 'very wrong'

A WOMAN has revealed how she was left devastated to hear she had tested positive for HIV during a routine screening, only to later find out that her diagnosis couldn't have been further from the truth.

Recalling her experience, she revealed that six years ago she was told by doctors she was HIV positive and was 'left in disbelief', while her mum was 'hysterical' and passed out following the diagnosis.

TikTok user @elzbthhope shared her story online in a video that has been watched over 847k times, where she revealed her boyfriend left her after she was led to believe she had HIV and she tried to take her own life.

"Six years ago I went to my annual OB appointment and got my routine screening. Two days later I was called and told to bring someone with me to discuss my results," she explained.

"Went in and sat down and my OB says, 'How do you handle bad news?' She comes straight out and says, 'You're HIV positive.'

"I just stared at her in disbelief and the only words I could get out were, 'What?' My mum passed out and they had to bring in the nurses to pick her up off the floor because she was hysterical."

The woman continued: "I asked how severe it was, the OB held my hand and told me, 'We're going to make sure you live the longest life you possibly can.'

"I left the appointment and tried to unalive myself two days later after my bf left me because his results came back negative."

In the weeks that followed, the woman later found out that doctors had been 'very wrong' about her initial diagnosis after she went to see a specialist to undergo more tests.

"Two weeks pass and I am on suicide watch… went to a HIV specialist to get some more tests ran and he tells me, 'I have no idea why she told you that you had HIV… your results are VERY negative,'" she said.

"Go back to my OB to discuss those results and she says, 'I didn't know much about HIV until your case… but I'm actually glad you're negative.'"

In a follow-up video, the woman explained how her false positive test result came about.

"The first test you get for HIV tests for the HIV antibody and there is a plethora of reasons why that test will come back reactive not positive. My results were reactive meaning that I could have had a virus, like the flu or something, and it triggered it to be reactive not positive," she revealed.

I asked how severe it was, the OB held my hand and told me, 'We're going to make sure you live the longest life you possibly can'

She explained that her obstetrician-gynecologist, who has been practicing for 20 years, had seen the "reactive" result and taken that as a positive reading.

"So basically, she saw reactive and was like you have HIV, no follow-up test. She sent me out the door without a pamphlet, no f***ing phone number to call… she was like, 'Someone will be in touch.'"

Many were left shocked by her story, with thousands commenting on her post.

One person was floored as they wrote in response: "Excuse me?! What?!"

Another said: "UM WHAT, she can't just 'Oopsies!'"

A third posted: "Wow. Talk about a roller coaster of emotions from just watching this! I can't imagine how you felt?!?"

One more was seen reacting to the boyfriend leaving, as they shared: "Obgyn helped you get rid of the real problem… the BF."

Another insisted: "I know people this has happened to… it's more common than people think. Always get a second third opinion!"
