I decided on a whim to check behind the board on our 1930s fireplace – people say what I found is ‘gorgeous’ | The Sun

A DELIGHTED householder has revealed the beautiful period detail uncovered during house renovations.

They decided on a whim to remove a board blocking their 1930s fireplace.

What it unveiled was a gorgeous Art Deco tiled feature, described by one fan as "magnificent."

The full glory of this vintage fireplace was disguised by an unsightly board.

Fortunately, the owners were not prepared to leave it like that.

House on the priory (@houseonthepriory) are sharing their house makeover on their TikTok.

“Renovating the forever house," is how they described their project.

The living room feature piece intrigued them in their post.

“Decided on a whim to see what was behind the board on our 1930s tile fireplace," they wrote.

“Armed with a pair of scissors and a need for spontaneity," they attacked the board to see what lay behind it.

After a concerted effort, the board eventually came away nearly in one piece.

When it did so it revealed a stunning timepiece.

The renovators were thrilled.

"Should we keep it when we decorate the living room?" they asked.

There wasn't much thinking done, however.

This beauty was here to stay and they showed the new room with a cozy fire burning in the fireplace after it had been “inspected and swept.”

Followers of their platform were in no doubt either about what they should do.

One man practically screamed, “Art Deco. For goodness sake don’t do anything but clean it.”

“Keep, keep, keep, it’s gorgeous," said another person.

There was a lone voice who thought some bucks could be made out of it, but he was drowned out by the many who said to keep it.
