Meghan Markle could scoop a prestigious Ethnicity Award after Prince Harry spoke out about ‘unconscious racism’ – The Sun

MEGHAN Markle is in the running to win a prestigious Ethnicity Award.

The Duchess of Sussex, 38, has been shortlisted for the 'Inspirational Public Figure' category – and is up against Naomi Campbell, Idris Elba, will.i.am and Sir Lenny Henry.

Organisers of the HSBC UK Ethnicity Awards – which take place in London on October 25 – hope that the new royal mum will be in attendance at the star-studded ceremony.

Other famous faces to be nominated for a gong include Rochelle Humes, Leigh-Anne Pinnock and Stormzy in the 'Influencer' category.

Anthony Joshua, Mo Farah and Raheem Sterling have made the 'Sportsperson' category.

The event's numerous other awards include those for 'Brand', 'Entrepreneur' and 'BAME Future Leader'.

Established last year, the awards are intended to honour people and organisations who have worked to improve the lives of ethnic minorities.

"It’s great to see so many celebrities, influencers, brands and politicians’ commitment to raising awareness, and who work so hard to improve equality," said Sarah Garrett MBE, founder of the Ethnicity Awards.

"It is great that Meghan Markle is on the shortlist too, she is an incredible role model for women and girls all over the world."

Her nomination comes as Prince Harry, 34, spoke out about "unconscious racism" in the new September issue of British Vogue which his wife guest-edited.

He said: "Despite the fact that if you go up to someone and say 'what you’ve just said, or the way you’ve behaved, is racist' – they’ll turn around and say, 'I’m not a racist'.

"'I’m not saying you’re a racist, I’m just saying that your unconscious bias is proving that because of the way that you’ve been brought up, the environment you’ve been brought up in, suggests that you have this point of view – unconscious point of view – where naturally you will look at someone in a different way'.

"And that is the point at which people start to have to understand."

Archie, his three-month-old son with Meghan, is the first major member of the royal family to have African-American blood.

Meghan's decision to put 15 women who she admires on the cover as 'Forces For Change' has received a mixed response.

British Vogue editor Edward Enniful – who revealed the duchess didn't want to appear "boastful" by appearing on the cover – has been nominated by an 'Influencer' gong at the Ethnicity Awards.
