A royal engagement is always a cause for celebration here in Britain, and announcements are usually paired with portraits of the happy couple and the debut of a brand new ring. So which royal engagement ring is your favourite? Have your say in the comments section below!
The Queen’s engagement ring
Starting where it all began, the Queen received her diamond engagement ring from Prince Philip in 1946, the year before they tied the knot at Westminster Abbey. The ring features a central diamond and clusters of smaller diamonds on either side, and it was crafted using stones from a tiara owned by Philip’s mother, Princess Alice of Battenberg.
Princess Diana and Kate, Duchess of Cambridge’s engagement ring
Lady Diana Spencer debuted her iconic sapphire and diamond engagement ring when her engagement to Prince Charles was announced in 1981. The ring reappeared in 2010 on the hand of Prince William’s new fiancee, Kate Middleton, now the Duchess of Cambridge.
Meghan Markle, Duchess of Sussex’s engagement ring
Prince Harry’s engagement to US actress Meghan Markle was announced in 2017, and Meghan flaunted a stunning trilogy diamond ring from her husband-to-be. The central diamond in Meghan’s ring was sourced from Botswana, where the couple had camped out under the stars in their early relationship, and two diamonds from the late Princess Diana’s collection.
Princess Eugenie’s engagement ring
Princess Eugenie, the younger York sister, announced her engagement to Jack Brooksbank in 2018 after several years of dating. Eugenie’s ring features a rare pink-orange padparadscha sapphire surrounded by diamonds in a beautiful floral pattern.
Princess Beatrice’s engagement ring
The elder York sister Princess Beatrice announced her engagement to Edoardo Mapelli Mozzi in 2019 and debuted a stunning Art Deco-inspired ring. The ring was designed by Shaun Leane and it includes a central diamond flanked by two tapered baguette diamonds.
Sarah Ferguson, Duchess of York’s engagement ring
The future Duchess of York bucked royal tradition with her ruby engagement ring from Prince Andrew. The central stone was surrounded by diamonds in a floral arrangement, similar to the engagement ring now worn by her daughter Eugenie.
Sophie, Countess of Wessex’s engagement ring
Sophie Rhys-Jones and Prince Edward got engaged in 1999, and Edward chose a trilogy diamond ring for his bride-to-be. Crafted by then royal jeweller Garrard, the ring features a central diamond flanked by two heart-shaped stones.
Zara Tindall’s engagement ring
Princess Anne’s daughter Zara Phillips received a solitaire diamond ring from her now husband, rugby ace Mike Tindall. The band of Zara’s ring is split and set with pavé diamonds.
