Tricky maths exam question leaves students and parents scratching their heads, so can YOU figure it out?

A MATHS question about crickets left thousands of high school students stumped, with pupils and parents unable to figure it out.

School kids in New South Wales, Australia were presented with the confusing section after changes were made to the "standard" maths exam -with many expressing their frustration on Twitter.

The paper included some temperature data, and students were asked to: “calculate the number of chirps expected in a 15-second interval when the temperature is 19° Celsius. Give your answer correct to the nearest whole number”.

But the "difficult" question left many scratching their heads, despite it being "within the scope of the syllabus".

A spokesperson from NSW Education Standards Authority, which sets the exam papers, told News.com.au: "NESA confirms that all questions asked within the Maths Standard 2 exam were within the scope of the syllabus."

"All HSC exam papers are designed to differentiate student achievement. NESA will monitor marking of the Maths Standard 2 paper very closely."

And added: “Mathematics education is a priority for the NSW Government.”

Many believed the issue with the paper was that both the standard maths exam and advanced had many of the same questions – with the confusing cricket scenario among them.

The spokesperson added: “The Maths Advanced and Maths Standard 2 papers now include some common questions which are based on shared syllabus content – This year 23 marks were common to the two papers.

“The inclusion of common questions enables NESA to better understand student maths abilities across the different maths courses.”
