16 Royal Premiere looks we love – from Kate Middletons Top Gun to a young Queen

It’s the mark of a truly VIP event – a Royal on the guestlist.

From the Queen down, no matter the occasion or official engagement, the royals can be counted upon for their immaculate fashion sense and timeless looks.

So when it comes to walking the red carpet, the Royals undeniably look the part front of the lights and flashing cameras.

From shaking hands with James Bond actor Daniel Craig to meeting Hollywood icons like Barbra Streisand, generations of royals have attended some of the biggest movie premieres throughout the years.

And as the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge get ready to rub shoulders with Tom Cruise at the premiere of Top Gun: Maverick, here’s a look at some of the best royal red carpet looks from days gone by…

1973

The Queen has always been known for her bright wardrobe and bold looks. In fact, according to the Countess of Wessex, this is deliberate – to ensure that members of the public can catch sight of her in big crowds. While attending a movie premiere in 1973, Her Majesty showed off her technicolour infused style with a floor length embroidered gown, fur stole and tiara.

1974

When the Murder on the Orient Express premiered in 1974, the occasion was a family affair. The Queen and Princess Anne looked glamorous as they matched in teal and blue gowns, while Prince Philip also attended the premiere.

1975

For the premiere of Funny Lady in 1975, the Queen met acclaimed actress Barbra Streisand. During the meeting, Barbra reportedly asked Her Majesty about her outfit choices and said: “Your Majesty, why is it that women have to wear white gloves to meet you and men don’t?” . Lost for words, the Queen is alleged to have replied: “I’ll have to think about that one. I suppose it’s tradition.”

1981

Back when she was still Lady Diana, the royal attended her first movie premiere in 1981 for James Bond film For Your Eyes Only. The red dress, which featured a sweetheart neckline and glitter detailing, became an iconic look of Diana’s and she was seen wearing it on several occasions. The staple look was even recreated in the latest series of The Crown.

1985

For the British premiere of A View To A Kill, the James Bond film starring Roger Moore, Princess Diana wore a stunning silver dress by designer Bruce Oldfield. The long sleeved gown featured a v-neck detail and dramatic shoulder pads, leading some fans to point out the similarities between the dress and a gown worn by Kate Middleton to the No Time To Die premiere.

1985

Written by David Lean, the 1984 historical drama A Passage to India proved to be a success on the big screen as it received a huge 11 Oscar nominations. But away from all the critical acclaim, the film’s premiere was an equally successful affair with Princess Diana, Princess Anne and the Queen Mother all attending the screening.

1987

Designed by David and Elizabeth Emanuel, the fairytale-esque dress was worn by Diana on multiple occasions, including to the James Bond premiere of The Living Daylights in 1987. With its sequins, crystals and pearl beads, the gown was sold for a whopping £102,000 in a 2013 auction.

2004

Given their princess titles, Princess Beatrice and Eugenie’s attendance at the premiere of The Little Princess was a fitting occasion. Accompanied by their mother the Duchess of York, the group all matched in their smart blue coats.

2006

Sitting down to watch Daniel Craig make his Bond debut in Casino Royale in Leicester Square, the Queen was joined by Prince Philip. For the 007 debut, Her Majesty wore a lilac dress with some intricate black detailing, as well as her infamous white gloves.

2008

Accompanied by Prince Charles, Camilla met with actresses Scarlett Johansson and Natalie Portman as part of the premiere of The Other Boleyn Girl where she wore a deep purple gown and matching accessories.

2012

Less than a year after tying the knot, the Duke and Duchess attended the premiere for War Horse in January 2012. While Prince William looked smart in a tuxedo, Kate wore a black laced gown by Alice Temperley, similar to her wedding dress.

2019

After Beyoncé and husband Jay Z referenced the Duchess of Sussex during their win at the 2019 Brit Awards, Harry and Meghan finally met the A-list couple while at the European Premiere of the Lion King. For the star-studded event, Meghan wore her hair in a sleek bun and donned a black semi-sheer midi dress by Jason Wu.

2019

That same year Harry and Meghan also attended the Cirque du Soleil premiere in London. Meghan, who was pregnant with Archie at the time, opted for a bump hugging sequin dress by Roland Mouret.

2021

Fans were quick to comment on the parallels between Diana’s dress and the gold gown worn by Kate Middleton at the No Time To Die in September 2021. For the occasion, the Duchess of Cambridge looked radiant as she opted for a custom sequin Jenny Packham cape gown. With its metallic hue and floaty design, it’s possible that Kate took style notes from Diana.

2022

The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge attended the highly-anticipated Top Gun: Maverick premiere united as a couple, and with their most glamorous looks for the Hollywood event where Kate was effortlessly chic and elegant in a black off-the-shoulder fitted gown, while 39 year old Prince William was his usual dapper self in a smart fitted tuxedo as he donned black tie for the evening.
