Completely free hack keeps your dog calm during fireworks

It’s the time of the year where you start hearing the unmistakable pop of fireworks as soon as the sun goes down.

For us humans it’s an annoyance at worst, but for dogs it can be seriously distressing.

Owners have reported their dogs collapsing due to the trauma, and one even needed treatment after running out into the road as it was so scared.

Some tips to calm dogs include making sure all windows and doors are shut, walking during the day when there’ll be no fireworks, and masking the sounds with TV or radio.

However, for others that’s not enough, and they still find their dog can hear the fireworks.

One owner’s handy tip could help calm your pup down – and it doesn’t cost a penny.

17-year-old Caitlin Miller from South Shields, shared her hack for helping calm her dog this week on Facebook.

Rather than buying expensive supplements or dog jackets, she suggested owners use a pair of old socks

She said: ‘Instead of buying anti stress bands or anything else off of the internet, just cut the two ends off a sock and put it on their head ensuring it’s not too tight, but comfortable.

‘It gives them a sensation of being cuddled and relaxes them. We used them last year and as firework season is back we’re using them again and thought I’d share with my friends.’

Her own dog, Ruby, has been scared of fireworks from a young age, to the point she was pulling out her fur.

Although the vet prescribed anxiety pills and a cone, these failed to help. But, ever since she came up with the ingenious sock solution, she’s found that Ruby immediately is calm – no matter which loud noises are going on outside.

Caitlin’s post on Facebook has been shared thousands of times, with dog owners desperate for a solution to their pet’s anxiety.

This is certainly worth a go.
