Everything to know about the ‘grandmillennial’ interior trend

When it comes to the world of interiors, you probably haven’t heard of the term ‘grandmillennial.’

This could be because before 2020 the phrase didn’t exist.

As the name suggests, the style merges all things ‘grandma’ and ’millennial’ for a bizarre fusion that rebels against minimalism.

Slightly less busy than a ‘cluttercore’ aesthetic but a little more creative than simple Scandi, grandmillenial falls somewhere between the two camps.


In fact, Airbnb has revealed that grandmillennial is one of its most popular buzzwords for 2022 – so there’s no doubt we’ll be encountering it a lot more over the coming months. 

So expect to see more ruffles, chintz, kitsch ornaments – as a nod to the grandma aesthetic – alongside houseplants and velvet sofas for a more modern twist.

There’s no denying the new trend is incredibly exciting and there’s lots of room to get creative with it.

However, if you’re unsure how to style your own home in this way, there’s always the option to get inspired from rentals that adopt the grandmillenial look.

Airbnb has more than 14,000 listings that feature ‘grandmillenial’ in their descriptions.

A two-bed apartment to rent in Alberta, Canada, has a retro regency feel to it, but in a modern and stylish way. It combines a fringed sofa and ornaments with gold accents and botanical prints.

Likewise, a charming cottage listing in Queensland, Australia, nods to the interior trend with floral prints, vintage vases, art deco furniture and more.

Over in the US, another listing fuses mid-century furniture with vibrant pops of colour, along with a classic portrait picture wall and loud leopard print rug.
