The Swedish furniture superstore brand is synonymous with good value flat pack furniture. Shoppers come for the immersive shopping experience and good prices, and stay for the meatballs and Diam Bar Cake.
Sadly for locals, this experience will no longer be coming to Lancing, West Sussex.
Richard Rands, market expansion manager at IKEA UK and Ireland, said: “This has not been an easy decision to make.
He told The Argus: “Today, we are operating in an incredibly fast-changing retail environment and customer shopping habits aren’t as they once were.
“Although we know that there is great potential in Sussex, we no longer believe that an IKEA store on the outskirts of Lancing is the optimum way to reach customers in the region.
“We understand this news may disappoint some and we remain committed to serving customers in Lancing in the best possible way, through both our online offer and home delivery service, as well as our remote selling and planning facilities.”
It was thought the new store would be 450 jobs to the area.
Locals took to Twitter to express their thoughts on the news.
One wrote: “Really disappointed to hear you’ve pulled out of the lancing store Sussex needs an IKEA.”

“Extremely sad news,” one wrote. “It was something I was really looking forward to as there are things we want to go and get.
“It’s one place actually shopping in store is my preference over buying online….it’s an experience where you go shopping, explore, have something to eat etc.”
“Wow! That is big news. But they have already started work on the site I think?” another said.
One wrote: “Nooooooo!”
Another replied: “I know right? I’ve got a mental list of stuff I’ve been waiting to get there when it eventually opens as my husband refuses to go to the Croydon one.”
One disappointed local said: “I went to the one in London yesterday and thought. I can’t wait for the local one. Hard to travel that far just for salmon.”
Another wrote: “I was looking forward to having an IKEA just down the road.”
Ikea has been in hot water amid a GB News row, incurring the rath of ex Top Gear presenter Jeremy Clarkson.
After some furore Ikea withdrew its advertising from the TV channel.
Writing in his latest column, Jeremy hit out at “professional stirrers” who are refusing to buy from brands that advertise and support GB News amid claims of “toxic propaganda”.
“And guess what? Even though these halfwits wouldn’t be able to buy anything, because they spend all their benefits on weed, many of the companies immediately caved in,” he claimed.
