Social media can’t get enough of “House of Gucci,” Ridley Scott’s upcoming movie about the murder of Maurizio Gucci — but the fashion family at the heart of the movie feels quite differently.

“We are truly disappointed. I speak on behalf of the family,” Patrizia Gucci, one of Maurizio’s second cousins, told The Associated Press on Wednesday.

“They are stealing the identity of a family to make a profit, to increase the income of the Hollywood system … Our family has an identity, privacy. We can talk about everything. but there is a borderline that cannot be crossed.”

Adam Driver stars in the crime drama as Gucci founder Guccio Gucci’s grandson and heir Maurizio, whose 1995 murder was orchestrated by his ex-wife Patrizia Reggiani, played by Lady Gaga. Dubbed the “Black Widow” by the press during her scandalous 1998 trial, Reggiani served 18 years in prison for hiring the killer.

Patrizia Gucci told the AP that she reached out to Ridley Scott’s wife, Giannina Facio, to discuss the film, but hasn’t heard back. Facio met with some of the Gucci family in the early 2000s to discuss another potential project, she added, but did not before “House of Gucci” went into production.

Patrizia pointed to alleged inaccuracies with the movie’s source material — Sara Gay Forden’s book “The House of Gucci: A Sensational Story of Murder, Madness, Glamour, and Greed” — as one of her family’s key concerns, along with the lack of current contact with Scott’s production company and the movie’s A-list casting choices.

“My grandfather [Aldo Gucci] was a very handsome man, like all the Guccis, and very tall, blue eyes and very elegant. He is being played by Al Pacino, who is not very tall already, and this photo shows him as fat, short, with sideburns, really ugly. Shameful, because he doesn’t resemble him at all,” Patrizia said.

As for Jared Leto’s portrayal of her father, Paolo Gucci? “Horrible, horrible. I still feel offended,” she said, adding that her family will decide on their next steps after seeing the finished film.

While the Gucci family is no longer involved in the fashion house today, Gucci president and chief executive officer Marco Bizzarri recently told WWD that the label is allowing “total creative freedom” to the production.

“Gucci is collaborating with MGM and Scott Free Productions by providing access to the house’s historical archive for wardrobe and props,” he said.

Leto is good friends with Gucci creative director Alessandro Michele. And Salma Hayek — whose husband François-Henri Pinault is the CEO of Kering, the luxury fashion group that owns Gucci — will also appear in Scott’s film.

Judging by photos snapped on the set in Italy, fans can expect to see plenty of outstanding outerwear, stylish knits and even wedding attire, among other glamorous costumes, when “House of Gucci” is released in November.

Representatives for Scott Free Productions could not be reached for comment.
