Inside brioche hair trend as Adele sparks 200% surge in demand for blonde styles

Adele has exploded back onto the scene with her latest album, 30 – but as well as her music, everybody is also kind of obsessed with her current beauty look.

Having launched her singing career sporting chestnut-coloured hair in the late noughties, the star has gradually transitioned through warmer shades over the years until she reached her current blonde shade.

This month she performed to a star-studded crowd of celebs for An Audience With Adele, with her honey-toned hair styled in a loose wave that oozed vintage glamour.

According to celebrity hairdresser and Jerome Russell brand educator Jason Collier, this has sent consumers into a frenzy as they rush to recreate the shade in their own locks.

"Since Adele's show aired, I have seen a 200% uplift in clients asking to lighten their hair, having taken inspiration from her modern take on Hollywood,” he says.

"This colour is all about super soft, expensive glamour. I love to call it ‘brioche blonde’, because it's that exact shade of a beautiful pastry out of the oven, and it evokes the same feelings – it's a warm, inviting and alluring shade."

So, what should you ask your own hairdresser for if you’re after the Adele aesthetic?

"The key to stealing Adele's style is to create a golden brown on top (at your root), turning lighter through the middle lengths and ends,” Jason says. “Her look was elevated beautifully by the styling – a modern take on old glamour. It's all about intentional softness.”

As for that vintage wave: “Blow dry using a balm and large round barrel brush to tame flyaways, and finish by lifting the root and flipping your parting over to the side."

Adele and her vintage glamour beauty look were certainly the talk of the town after her ITV special. But there was another celeb whose hair colour sent Twitter into a frenzy on the night.

Viewers spotted that David Tennant had recently dyed his hair bright red – with many joking he’d “won Squid Game” in a nod to the Netflix show’s lead character Seong Gi-Hun.

However, fans soon stepped in to remind them that this was more likely because filming had resumed for the Amazon/BBC show Good Omens, in which Tennant’s character Crowley has the same flame-red shade of hair.

But who knows, maybe he’ll make the move a permanent arrangement one day!
