He was due to fly from Lima, Peru to Rio de Janeiro in Brazil to meet his wife. 

59 years ago (1963) US President John F Kennedy was welcomed by a crowd of hundreds as he arrived on a visit to his ancestral home in County Wexford, Ireland.

Delivering a speech to the Irish Parliament in Dublin the following day, he acknowledged Ireland’s historic struggle for freedom from British rule.

36 years ago (1986) The International Court of Justice at The Hague found the United States violated international law by supplying arms to the anti-communist Contra rebels in Nicaragua.

However, Washington boycotted the case and vowed to ignore the ruling, sparking demonstrations in the US.
