Kate Middleton chanelled Princess Diana's White House dress

A tribute to Diana? Kate Middleton channelled her late mother-in-law’s White House dress at Diplomatic Reception – in the same week the iconic gown was auctioned

  • Duchess of Cambridge, 37, dazzled in Alexander McQueen on Wednesday night
  • Gown was very similar to one worn by Princess Diana to the White House in 1985
  • Both were made from velvet and boast the same flattering sweetheart neckline
  • Comes on the same week Diana’s dress was bought by Historic Royal Palaces

The Duchess of Cambridge appeared to pay tribute to her late mother-in-law with her choice of gown on Wednesday night.

Kate Middleton, 37, was resplendent in a regal black velvet gown by Alexander McQueen as she joined husband Prince William for the Queen’s Diplomatic Reception at Buckingham Palace.

The Duchess wore the gown with the Queen Mary’s Lover’s Knot tiara – a favourite of Diana’s – but that is not the end of the connection to the princess.

Writing in the Daily Telegraph, Bethan Holt noted there are ‘remarkable similarities’ between the gown and the one worn by Diana at the White House in 1985.

Both are made from the same material – a rich, dark velvet – and boast the same flattering sweetheart neckline.

The fashion echo is particularly pertinent this week as it comes just days after Princess Diana’s Victor Edelstein gown, which she famously wore to dance with John Travolta at the state banquet, was auctioned.

The gown, which was first auctioned in 1997, did not reach the reserve price of £200,000 when it first went under the hammer on Monday. But it was later sold post-auction to Historic Royal Palaces, which manages the Royal Ceremonial Dress Collection, for £264,000.

Holt noted: ‘It would have been a strong comparison at any time, but to wear this gown when a similar – and very famous – historic one is back in the news is a deft tribute.’

Kate also showcased what is thought to be a new diamond ring on her right hand at the white tie reception.

A close look at photos show what appears to be a ring set with a large cluster of diamonds.

The piece, which was worn on her ring finger, has not been seen on the Duchess before.

It is not known whether the ring is part of an existing royal jewels collection, or if it is a new addition to her wardrobe.
