Lidl to give front-line staff a £200 bonus to say thanks for hard work during Covid

LIDL is dishing out £200 bonuses to over 23,000 front-line staff to say thanks for their “hard work and ongoing dedication” during Covid .

The £200 cash boost will be given to customer assistants, warehouse operatives and cleaners across Lidl’s 800 stores and 13 distribution centres.

And Lidl’s 1,800 office colleagues will be given a £100 payment for their efforts during the pandemic.

In total, 25,000 workers will receive a bonus which means Lidl will be forking out £5.5m in total.

Lidl chief Christian Härtnagel said the bonus awards come following an “extremely challenging period” workers have had to face due to the pandemic.

He added: “I am incredibly proud of the dedication and commitment our colleagues have shown and continue to show and this payment is about recognising their unrelenting hard work and thanking each individual for the important part they’ve played in the year like no other.”

Lidl also announced in November last year that workers were set to receive a pay boost.

The supermarket will increase wages of staff on hourly rates from £9.30 to £9.50 per hour outside the M25 and £10.75 to £10.85 within the M25.

This pay boost will come into effect from March this year.

It comes as Lidl and supermarkets across the board have been battling against a boom in demand for groceries over lockdown three.

A raft of supermarkets, including Tesco, Sainsbury’s and Iceland, are looking for an army of thousands to help stores cope with the surge.

And shops have had another battle on their hands to toughen up rules for shopping in store amid fears that the ciris can be spread through handled goods.
