Millions of Brits could claim up to £125 tax during third coronavirus lockdown

Those working from home due to the coronavirus pandemic might be able to claim up to £125 in tax.

The tax relief scheme aims to help employees claim back any additional expenses, like payment on energy bills.

Under the plan, the worker's tax code is adjusted so that they're not made to pay as much tax when they get their wages.

The support isn't new but workers are being reminded about the tax relief as England was plunged into a third lockdown this week.

On Monday evening, Prime Minister Boris Johnson ordered people to stay at home in a bid to curb rising Covid-19 infection rates.

It comes after the UK broke another grim record for daily number of coronavirus infections and reported 1,041 deaths on Wednesday.

Now HMRC is accepting claims for the whole tax year due to the pandemic and it launched an online tool in October to help you do it.

To claim the tax relief, the employer must have required or asked you to work from home.

Sadly it doesn't apply to those Brits who decided to work from home themselves.

With many firms struggling now, it is likely you'll receive around £6 a week to cover costs at home.

There are certain things you can claim tax on under the HMRC rules, like expenses for working from home.

You can also claim tax relief on business mileage, repairing specialist clothing, as well as travel and overnight expenses.

A spokesperson said: "You can claim tax relief on working from home related expenses if you have been told to work from home by your employer because of the coronavirus pandemic.

"The online service is easy to use and just takes a few minutes to make a claim."

If you haven't submitted a claim for this tax year (April 6, 2020 to April 5, 2021), HMRC has an online tool.

Once the application has been approved, the portal will adjust your tax code for the 2020 to 2021 tax year.

You will then get the tax relief directly through your salary and will continue to receive the adjustment until April 5, 2021.
