My boyfriend is trying to force me to have abortion by threatening to leave me

DEAR DEIDRE: DESPITE being happy at first, my boyfriend has told me to have an abortion.

I am 12 weeks pregnant and already in love with the baby that is growing inside me.

I’m 31 and already the mother of two little girls. Their father left me for somebody else, which was hard.

My boyfriend is 30 and said I would be on my own if I kept the baby. At first I agreed about an abortion – but then I told him I couldn’t go through with it.

He then said he would take me to court for full custody of the baby.

He said he could prove I’d agreed to an abortion. Will this go against me in court?

DEIDRE SAYS:
Absolutely not. You are entitled to consider an abortion and entitled to change your mind too. For the dad to have the baby full-time, a judge must decide this would be in the best interests of the child. I very much doubt that is the case.

This is simply a threat to put pressure on you.

But your boyfriend would have a legal duty to help support his child.

You can get advice from Families Need Fathers, who help mothers too (fnf.org.uk, 0300 0300 363).
