Nutella is undoubtedly one of the most popular spreads in the world.

It works perfectly on a slice of toast and it even sweetens things up on Pancake Day.

Now the creators of the famous chocolate brand has revealed some changes to the 400g pots.

The makers Ferrero confirmed the jars will be reduced to 350g, but shoppers will still pay the same price of £2.90.

It is believed the rising raw material costs is the main reason for the size reduction.

The news comes after the price of Nutella increased despite a fall in the cost of hazelnuts back in 2017.

Fortunately, the creators insisted there will be no changes to the recipe.

A Ferrero spokesperson told Food Navigator : "The costs in relation to our products has risen.

"In the UK, we have made a change to our Nutella 400g which will now be available as a 350g.

"These changes enable us to still provide our consumers with the highest quality, taste and freshness of their favourite product."

The latest Office for National Statistics data for 2015-17 shows firms have shrank 206 items and increased just 79.

Consumer website Which? said: "It's understandable that households feel frustrated."

And an ONS report added: "We also observed that prices tended not to change when products changed size, consistent with the idea that some products are undergoing 'shrinkflation'."

Most products that changed size (144) were food and drink, with 86 shrinkages made up of spreads, confectionary, sugar, bread, cereal and meat.

Mars, which makes Maltesers, M&M's and Minstrels, also blamed rising raw material and operational costs for changes to pack sizes.
