Snail slime skincare duo sells every 20 seconds – we try it

Slathering the slime that’s excreted by snails all over your face might not sound like the most appealing procedure going, but doing so actually has a whole lot of skincare benefits you may not be aware of.

It may sound bizarre if you were brought up on a Clinique “cleanse-tone-moisturise” regime, but snail mucin (aka slime) has been used in Korean skincare routines for years because of said benefits. It’s rich in antioxidants, can calm inflammation and is super hydrating, as well as boasting anti-ageing and antimicrobial properties.

With the substance racking up millions of views on TikTok, there are two cult skincare products containing the stuff that have proven particularly popular – COSRX Advanced Snail 96 Mucin Power Essence,£14.39 here, and Advanced Snail 92 All In One Cream,£16.75 here.

One of the duo sells every 20 seconds and currently both products are out of stock at Boots, Lookfantastic, Feelunique and Beauty Bay (so you’d better place that Amazon order quickly if you want to try it any time soon).

And for anybody that’s worried about snails being harmed in the making of these products, the slime is actually collected from the snails by letting them trail over a very fine mesh in a quiet, dark room – and they aren’t forced to over-produce.

It’s not just the masses that are loving it – the A-list are on the snail mucin hype too. Take model Emily Ratajkowski, who is one famous face who has shared the love for the two products.

"So my skin freaked out at the beginning of quarantine," she explained on Instagram stories to her 29 million followers back in April 2020, before listing her regime as Dr Loretta cleanser, COSRX's snail essence – which she described as “amazing” – and retinol.

So what are they *actually* like, we hear you ask? To see what all the hype is about, beauty writer Lucy got her hands on both the essence and cream to put them to the test. Here’s how she got on…

Lucy says:

The thought of snail slime is not enough to put me off a product that promises great hydration and anti-ageing benefits. There’s very little I won’t try, with the exception of very strong chemical formulas, and the amount of times I’ve seen this on my TikTok For You page is a good sign that this is a great skincare duo.

First thing’s first, both products have a unique texture that’s a little unusual. If you imagine how snail slime might feel, well…both products are like that. A little sticky and very stretchy, with the cream a bit thicker in consistency.

Despite its sticky texture, both products still manage to be quite light on the skin. My skin is on the oily side, but I think these formulas would be nourishing enough for a drier complexion, although you may want to layer a thicker cream over the top if your dryness is extreme.

After the first use I didn’t wake up with a greasy-feeling face and I had absolutely no redness. My skin looked and felt hydrated and happy. I can’t speak on the long term benefits of using these two in my skincare routine, but my first impressions are great.

Looks like I’ll be sticking with this sell-out duo (no pun intended).
