Now, hardware stores are slowing opening their doors once again, now that they are confident they they can operate while keeping staff and customers safe.

This Friday is the first bank holiday in May and marks the 75th anniversary of VE Day.

If you're planing on using the three day weekend to carry out some home renovations, then here's how the bank holiday affects DIY store opening ours:

B&Q

B&Q has now reopened all 288 of its stores nationwide although staff and customers will have to follow strict social distancing measures.

This includes two metre floor markers throughout shops and perspex screens at checkouts.

Customers may also have to queue to get into stores, with shops limiting the number of shoppers allowed in at one time.

The retailer will be open as usual on Firday from 8am until 5pm although this may vary depending on the store.

You can what your local store is doing by using the locator tool here.

Homebase

Homebase has reopened all of its stores across the UK after a successful trial of 20 stores back in April.

Stores are planned to open from 10am until 5pm but you should check individual branch opening times here.

Despite being open again, it has stopped offering some services such as kitchen design appointments, key cutting or some concessions, including Bathstore and Rug Doctor carpet cleaners, which you can normally hire for 48 hours.

Online orders are also taking longer to process than usual due to high demand.

Screwfix

Screwfix stores remain closed for browsing but customers can pick up "essential" click and collect orders.

The retailers have designated outside areas where customers can collect their items.

On Friday, stores are scheduled to be open for collections from 8am until 5pm.

Some stores have had to close due to staffing levels so it's worth finding out what your local is doing here.

Wickes

Wickes has only reopened six of its 230 stores with strict social distancing measures in place a month after the government put us into lockdown.

Stores in Pudsey, Cheltenham, Preston, Sevenoaks, Cricklewood and Hailsham will open to the public on Thursday, April 30.

It's changed its opening hours and limited the number of customers allowed in any store at one times.

On Friday Wickes stores are open from 7am until 6pm from Monday to Saturday, including this bank holiday.
