Young mum told husband ‘dial 999, I love you’ before suddenly dying at home

A young mum told her husband 'dial 999, I love you' before she collapsed and died suddenly after suffering from a "bad cough" over Christmas.

Liz Mellor, 36, had been feeling unwell over Christmas so she went to her GP, who told her she had a virus, her sister Cath Morris said.

But just days into the New Year the mum from Cimla in Neath, Wales, collapsed at home after screaming to her husband Mike that she couldn't breathe.

Cath said the unexpected death of the mum-of-three, who would "light up a room with her bubbly personality and wicked laugh" has left the family heartbroken.

The family are still waiting to find out the cause of her death on January 5, Cath told Wales Online .

Liz, who was a nurse at Singleton Hospital in Swansea, leaves behind husband of nine years Mike, three-year-old twin daughters Kitty and Eliza and 14-year-old son Max.

Cath said: "She was ill over Christmas, she had a bad cough and chest, a virus just like everyone gets. No-one was particularly worried.

"She had seen the GP and he said it was a virus. She went to the hospital and they did an x-ray as a precaution but we didn't think that anything was drastically wrong.

"We don't know yet what happened as we are waiting on the postmortem.

"Christmas is her favourite time of year. She was the one who would get us all together but that didn't happen this year as she wasn't feeling well."

Cath has described the moment she found out her sister had died.

"Then on January 5 I had missed calls on my phone from my dad who left me a message. My dad never leaves messages.

"Straight away I said to my husband that someone has died. When I got through to my dad I thought something had happened to mum.

"I said 'don't tell me mum has died' and he said no Liz and I just collapsed onto the floor. I felt like I was in a surreal nightmare.

"He said that she felt like she couldn't breathe. She said to her husband that she was going upstairs where it was a bit cooler and within seconds she screamed down to him 'Mike I can't breathe'.

"He ran upstairs and she just looked at him and said 'dial 999, I love you' and she just collapsed onto the floor.

"Then her heart stopped," added Cath.

"She's got no conditions that we are aware of, she was never ill, she only went to hospital when she had the kids.

"I think sometimes I believe that it hasn't happened. She was just so kind and selfless you just couldn't not like her.

"I can't believe this has happened to her. She's going to miss so many milestones – her twin daughters are starting nursery next week.

"She had a still birth before the twins but she always said 'at least I still get to see the twins go to school'."

Liz loved the Ospreys which led to her meeting her husband Mike. Both huge fans, they became friends first before falling in love. Liz also had another sister named Rebecca Hughes.

Cath, who lives in Pontardawe , said that the three sisters used to fight as children but as they got older they all became good friends.

"My mum is struggling because Liz would phone her and be over her house every day," she said.

"We always go out as a family and it's always Liz organising it. We have to keep that going.

"Mike was the practical one in the house always getting on with things. He is a reserved character, he's such a lovely man.

"Mike has lost two wives, two children and a grandson in his life. He's lost so much, and my sister was his rock.

"The twins don't really understand what is going on.

"The other day they did ask 'where's mammy, is mammy coming home' and they got a little bit upset and noticed that she wasn't there. Max is holding himself together but he's close to his sisters."

Liz and Mike were planning on renewing their vows in Cyprus next year.
