Arsenal slammed by Gonzalo Higuain after claiming he was too expensive to sign… before splashing out on Mesut Ozil | The Sun

STRIKER Gonzalo Higuain has mocked Arsenal for claiming he was "too expensive" before they broke the bank for Mesut Ozil.

The Argentine forward was heavily linked with a move to the Emirates back in 2013.

But negotiations eventually broke down between the Gunners and Real Madrid as Arsene Wenger's side were not willing to meet the Spanish giants' valuation.

That summer, Higuain moved to Napoli for £34.5million.

Just over one month later, Arsenal then obliterated their transfer record as they splashed out on another Madrid player in Ozil.

The North London club paid £42.4m for the German's services and he would spend nine years on their books before eventually moving on in January.

But Higuain, who now plays for David Beckham's Inter Miami in the MLS, still cannot understand why they felt he was too pricey but then purchased Ozil that same summer.

Speaking to TyC Sports, he said: "I remember that I was on the verge of going to Arsenal when I went to Napoli, but they said I was too expensive. And a few days later, they paid €80m for Ozil!"

Higuain's recollection of Ozil's transfer fee is an exaggerated one.

But the point stands and it remains something of a mystery as to why Arsenal felt Higuain was too expensive.

He would go on to score 91 goals in 146 games for Napoli, before joining Juventus and netting 66 times in 149 appearances.

Meanwhile, Ozil had a mixed time during his lengthy stint with the Gunners.

When he left for Fenerbahce earlier this year, the World Cup winner departed with figures of 44 goals and 77 assists in 254 matches.

He won three FA Cups during his time at Arsenal.
