The club's statement said: "Aston Villa is pleased to announce the signing of Robin Olsen for an undisclosed fee.

"The Swedish goalkeeper joins from AS Roma on a permanent deal having spent the second half of last season on loan at Villa Park.

"Olsen made his Villa debut on the final day of last season at Manchester City."

Fabrizio Romano has reported the fee for the goalkeeper is £3million.

The 32-year-old was the victim of an assault from some Man City fans as they invaded the pitch following their 3-2 comeback against Steven Gerrard's team which clinched the Premier League title.

City quickly issued an apology following the incident, declaring they had launched an investigation and would ban the individuals involvedfrom The Etihad indefinitely.

Including his sole appearance for Villa, Olsen has now made 23 appearances in English football, although just eight of these have come in the Premier League.

Olsen will likely remain the second-choice goalkeeper behind Emiliano Martinez, who missed the final day with a knee injury.

This deal is Villa's fourth signing this window, after signing former Liverpool star Phillippe Coutinho on a permanent deal from Barcelona.

The club followed this up by completing the transfer of Boubacar Kamara on a free transfer and then signing Sevilla defender Diego Carlos for £26million.

Villa have also been linked with a surprise deal for Luis Suarez, as Gerrard looks to use his standing within the game to attract high-profile stars and bring the Birmingham based club into the top-half.
