Baker Mayfield’s sad look that went viral was a punishment

The Browns’ rocky start to the season has caused Baker Mayfield to re-evaluate all aspects of what he’s putting on the field, including his facial hair.

The first overall pick of 2018 peculiarly shaved twice on Sunday, before and after Cleveland’s fourth straight loss, a 24-19 defeat against the Broncos. ESPN reported that the 24-year-old quarterback arrived to Empower Field with a full beard and then took the field with a handlebar mustache, before doing his postgame press conference with a mustache.

That plain and somewhat depressing version of Mayfield went viral as fans compared his current look to his sharper ones of the past. It  garnered even more attention when actor Macaulay Culkin pegged Mayfield as Daniel Stern’s character from “Home Alone.”

“The original thought for me, do handlebars,” Mayfield, still sporting the mustache, said Wednesday. “I was undefeated before Sunday with the handlebar mustache.

“So I shaved it off because I didn’t deserve it.”

It’s been a rough season for Mayfield and the Browns, the weight of expectations crashing in to a 2-6 start to the season. Mayfield abruptly walked away from his media availability last week after a heated exchange with a reporter.

Mayfield ranks last in the NFL in total quarterback ranking while targeting wide receivers, according to ESPN Stats and Info. He has thrown seven touchdowns compared to 12 interceptions.
