BBC Sports Personality of the Year 2022 – SPOTY winner odds: England hero Beth Mead leads O'Sullivan, Kane and Fury | The Sun

BETH MEAD is the new favourite to win the 2022 BBC Sports Personality of the Year award.

That's according to bookmakers Betfair, who've slashed Mead's price from 7/1 to 11/4 overnight following a flurry of activity in the betting markets.

The Arsenal forward scored her SIXTH goal of Euro 2022 as England beat Sweden to reach their first major tournament final since 2009.

The 27-year-old is currently top goal-scorer in this year's competition, two clear of her nearest Golden Boot rivals heading to Wembley.

Asked about it, Mead said: "It's nice to be up there [in the Golden Boot race] but sometimes being chased isn't always the nicest.

"It's nothing I ever thought about being close to. I'm really happy to be where I am but it's not something I'm thinking about – I just want to win with the team."

Betfair spokesperson Sam Rosbottom said: "After scoring her sixth goal of Euro 2022 to help England reach the final on Tuesday night, Beth Mead is the new 11/4 favourite to win the 2022 BBC Sports Personality of the Year award.

"The Arsenal striker had been 7/1 prior to Tuesday, but she has now overtaken Ronnie O'Sullivan, who is 3/1 to receive the prestigious prize.

"Mead's odds are likely to shorten once more if England beat either Germany or France in Sunday's final and the Lionesses are now odds-on favourites to bring football home."

She now leads previous frontrunner Ronnie O’Sullivan (3/1), who claimed a record-equalling seventh World Championship title in Sheffield earlier this year.

Jake Wightman has rocketed into contention at 8/1 after taking 1500m gold at the World Championships in Oregon.

Tottenham talisman Harry Kane is next at 10/1, followed by Tyson Fury at 14s.

England's Matt Fitzpatrick (18/1) fought off competition from Scottie Scheffler and Will Zalatoris to claim his first major title with a one-shot victory in the US Open at Brookline.

He became just the third Englishman in 52 years to win golf's second oldest major.
