Blackburn next manager odds: Daniel Farke and Gareth Ainsworth the frontrunners, Johnson and Cocu also in the mix

BLACKBURN are on the hunt for a new manager after it emerged that Tony Mowbray's contract at Ewood Park would not be extended beyond this season.

Sky Bet have placed the former Norwich manager Daniel Farke as the 2/1 favourite, closely followed by the Wycombe boss Gareth Ainsworth at 5/2.

Blackburn, who occupied the automatic promotion places as recently as January, currently sit in ninth place going into the final game of the season this weekend against Birmingham, which will also be Mowbray's last with the club.

Farke is currently the favourite to take over managerial duties, with the new manager's main goal, whoever it may be, to secure promotion back to the Premier League.

Farke has a history of recent success in the second tier, having managed Norwich to two Championship titles in 2019 and 2021.

The German was sacked in November last year, with his side bottom of the Premier League.

Farke had since took over at Russian side Krasnodar in January this year, but left the club seven weeks later without managing a game.

Ainsworth, the current Wycombe manager, is also strongly linked with the Rovers job. The former QPR coach is currently the second longest serving manager in England's top four divisions, having taken over in 2012.

Ainsworth was born in Blackburn and was a season ticket holder at Ewood Park in his youth, as well as playing for their academy.

Perhaps his greatest managerial achievement to date was winning promotion with Wycombe up to the Championship in 2020, when the club had odds of 7/2 to be relegated at the start of the 2019/20 season.

Ainsworth has managed to secure Wycombe's place in the League One play-offs again this time around, climbing in to the top six on the final day of the season – they'll meet MK Dons in the semi finals.

Current backroom staff member and former Blackburn player Damien Johnson is also in the running for the manager's job, with Sky Bet offering 5/1 odds.

Former PSV, Fenerbahce and Derby boss Phillip Cocu is also in the frame, with the former Barcelona player and 100-time Netherlands international at 6/1 to be Rovers' next boss.

Mowbray took over as Blackburn's manager in February 2017 with the side stuck in a relegation battle in the Championship.

Rovers ended up being relegated on goal difference on the final day of the season, but they managed to secure promotion from League One at the first time of asking, racking up 96 points in the process.

Since being back in the Championship, Mowbray established Blackburn as a solid mid-table outfit, finishing between 11th and 15th in their first three seasons.

This season looked to be a promotion chasing one but an untimely injury to top scorer and star man Ben Brereton Diaz in February with the club in third place led to a loss of form, with three wins from their last 17 games leaving them currently in ninth.
