‘Relentless’ Carl Lawson is unstoppable at Jets training camp

Observations from Jets training camp on Tuesday.

Mims connects

WR Denzel Mims made his first catch from Zach Wilson in 11-on-11 periods during camp — a sign he is slowly climbing up the rotation. In his second-team reps, Mims bounced back from a dropped pass, which led to a Sharrod Neasman interception of Mike White, by later hauling in a deep sideline pass from White.

Mauling Mekhi

There are two sides to DE Carl Lawson’s continued dominance in training camp. It can’t be overlooked that almost all of his damage is coming at the expense of left tackle Mekhi Becton, who seems unable to handle Lawson’s speed. In all, the Jets’ offensive line allowed five sacks on the day.

Caught my eye

With a heavy emphasis on the running game in 11-on-11s, second-year RB La’Mical Perine lowered the boom to knock over veteran FS Lamarcus Joyner. It was a moment in which tempers could’ve flared, but Joyner was first to his feet and actually extended his arm to help up Perine.

Zach Wilson’s day

Wilson was 11-for-16 during team periods, but didn’t lead the team to a touchdown in any of his seven series, which mostly included runs, screens and other short routes. His final pass of the day was intercepted by Marcus Maye in the end zone, after Joyner dropped an earlier interception. He was victimized by two drops (Chris Herndon and Corey Davis).

Injury report

Wilson hit his hand on a helmet while following through on a pass and came away with a “little scratch,” according to coach Robert Saleh. But he didn’t miss a series. OL Alijah Vera-Tucker and DL Quinnen Williams trained off to the side. CB Justin Hardee left practice with a hip injury.
