Five stars who could light up MLS like Lionel Messi and Luis Suarez as Theo Walcott targets MLS transfer

MAJOR LEAGUE SOCCER could be set for a major influx of top stars in the near future.

Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo, who stood out in the previous decade as the best in the world, are at the twilight of their careers and could soon be looking for a new challenge.

The star pair no longer seem to have the exact same influence they had in their glory years and could follow a number of big names in the US.

The likes of Zlatan Ibrahimovic, David Beckham, Wayne Rooney and Steven Gerrard moved across the pond as they were reaching the end of their careers.

And soon enough we may see some more formidable names flying on the other side of the Atlantic for perhaps one last payday.

SunSport take you through the five stars that could join MLS as soon as this summer:

Lionel Messi

Lionel Messi shocked the world when he left Barcelona after 17 years for Paris Saint-Germain last summer.

However, Messi has struggled to emulate his Nou Camp success at the Parc des Princes this season and attracted plenty of criticism.

The seven-time Ballon d'Or winner has been linked with a move to David Beckham's Inter Miami but a potential transfer is unlikely to happen before 2023 when his PSG contract expires.

Cristiano Ronaldo

Manchester United superstar Cristiano Ronaldo's future at Old Trafford has been uncertain for quite some time.

Ronaldo has been United's shining light amid a horrid season despite his advanced age of 37 years old.

If the five-time Ballon d'Or winner leaves in June, a potential move Stateside could not be ruled out.

Neymar

Paris Saint-Germain superstar Neymar still has a lot of productive years ahead of him as he's only 30.

However, the Brazil international recently admitted that he'd like to move to the US at some point in order to prolong his career.

Nevertheless, MLS commissioner Don Garber doesn't seem too keen as he insists the American league is not a place for star names to merely come and retire anymore.

Luis Suarez

Atletico Madrid star Luis Suarez will be out of contract in June and is unlikely to stay at the Wanda Metropolitano.

Suarez is 35 years old and may struggle to find a deal in Europe as good as the ones he had at Liverpool, Barcelona and Atletico.

Plus, the striker is a very good friend of Lionel Messi and could be convinced to go to the US if the Argentina captain takes the leap first.

Theo Walcott

Southampton ace Theo Walcott is keen on a switch to MLS as he hasn't played for his team since an FA Cup outing in February.

Walcott has a year remaining on his deal with Saints and manager Ralph Hasenhuttl is happy to let him go at the end of the season.

The ex-Arsenal star has considered a switch Stateside before and is open to doing so if the interest is there this summer, with either Los Angeles or New York among his favoured destinations.
