France to scrap their League Cup sparking fears England could follow suit and pave way for European Super League – The Sun

FRANCE'S LEAGUE CUP has been scrapped by French football chiefs sparking fears English big wigs will follow suit to pave the way for a European Super League.

The Coupe de la Ligue has been suspended from next season amid UEFA plans to grow the Champions League exclusively revealed by SunSport.

And there are fears the latest development in France could signal the end of the 59-year-old League Cup competition in England.

The decision to kill off the Coupe de la Ligue, leaves England as the last of the Big Five European nations to have two domestic knock-out competitions.

The European Clubs Association, which is pushing the Champions League changes that were temporarily shelved last week, has cited the issue of Prem clubs playing up to 12 games more per season than Bundesliga sides.

But the French decision, based on “commercial reasons” will put further pressure from Europe for English football to consider the future of the competition currently known as the Carabao Cup.

The Ligue de Football Professionel's board of directors met on Wednesday morning and voted for the suspension of the Coupe de la Ligue which was first played in 1994.

And the decision is final as it was ratified by the general meeting of the same body later in the afternoon.

The competition had failed to find a broadcaster to show games between 2020 and 2024.

And ultimately, the board were not convinced by plans for a new competition format aimed at revamping the ailing contest.

Plans for a regional split of the competition – similar to that of the Football League Trophy in England – were tabled.

As well as one that would have seen only the top eight teams in Ligue 1 compete.

But the board's mind remained unchanged and the Cup will now disappear from the landscape.

The LFP claim they want to revive the competition in years to come, but fans remain sceptical.

Paris Saint-Germain are the most successful club in the competition's history with 8 titles while Strasbourg are the current champions.
