Gerwyn Price says "the best player doesnt win anymore" in cryptic post

Gerwyn Price took to social media following a controversial night of Premier League Darts in which he crashed out against Jonny Clayton before Joe Cullen's overall victory.

The 2021 PDC World Darts Champion, who recently lost his world No.1 ranking to Peter Wright, lost 6-5 in his quarter-final meeting with an average of 94.91 – before taking to Instagram.

Price wrote: "The best player doesn't win anymore. The game is gone. Well done." Following that outburst, the Welshman went into further detail about his stance – insisting that it wasn't in relation to the night of Premier League action.

He added: "I wasn't talking about my game or about last night in particular, the best player on the day doesn't always win because the game is spoiled, dictated and influence by non darts fans.

"But what I say will always be twisted. Makes me smile though."

With Clayton then losing to Michael van Gerwen in the semis-finals, Joe Cullen would go on to win his first night of the campaign having seen off James Wade and Peter Wright before MVG.

In not reaching any of the last four finals, Price has slipped out of the playoff spots with nine points – sitting behind Van Gerwen, Wright, Clayton and now Cullen.

Price's comments came after a controversial night in which objects were thrown at both Michael Smith and Cullen by the crowd, with Gary Anderson losing his cool on stage for an incident with the overall winner.

The two-time world champion went into the encounter in a fine run of form, but failed to build on early success to throw away a 5-4 lead against Cullen.

Having initially smiled and shook the hand of his opponent, the mood turned sour on stage – which initially left viewers baffled before an update from the broadcaster.

The argument continued as Anderson walked off the oche, with Cullen doing an over the top celebration and brushing off the complaints of his counterpart.

Sky Sports Darts presenter Emma Paton told fans after the break that the complaint was regarding alleged encroachment, with Anderson believing he wasn't given enough space while throwing.
