Harvey Elliott escapes FA ban for dive to win Liverpool penalty against Arsenal in Carabao Cup thriller – The Sun

HARVEY ELLIOTT has escaped FA punishment over claims he dived to win a penalty in Liverpool's Carabao Cup thriller against Arsenal.

The teenager sparked outrage among Gunners fans for theatrically tumbling over the challenge of Gabriel Martinelli to earn the spot-kick which saw the Reds pull the score back to 2-3.

Because Liverpool benefited from the fall, the FA would have been able to take retrospective action against him if they thought it was a clear dive.

But disciplinary bosses at Wembley have decided to give the 16-year-old the benefit of the doubt and will not pursue the matter.

Liverpool went on to win the match on penalties after thrilling 90 minutes which saw the scores tied at 5-5.

Highly-rated midfielder Elliott was one of several youngsters who impressed on the night at Anfield on Wednesday against an Arsenal side containing a large number of senior stars.

The youngster has settled in well to life on Merseyside after deciding to quit Fulham for Liverpool over the summer – though he was hit with a 14-day ban after posting a video on social media mocking Harry Kane.

Boss Jurgen Klopp has spoken highly of his potential and has not ruled out bringing him into Premier League action this season at some stage.

So far he has only figured in two Carabao Cup matches, but his performances have given a clear glimpse of his potential and he has not looked out of place in either.

And it is expected he will be involved in the quarter-final against Aston Villa as Klopp is forced to juggle his squad due to the fixture congestion his side faces.

That match is likely to be switched to mid-January with the Reds on Club World Cup duty in December when it had been scheduled to be held.

Klopp had threatened to pull his side out of the competition if authorities ordered them to play at a time he felt was not practical.
