Joe Cullen says his “conscience is clear” after Gary Anderson brands him “cheat”

Joe Cullen says his "conscience is clear" after Gary Anderson branded him a "cheat" during their heated Premier League encounter.

The two men went head-to-head in the night's second quarter-final in Rotterdam, with Cullen prevailing 6-5 after Anderson had missed four match darts to win the tie. But things boiled over after the match as Anderson took issue with something Cullen had apparently done during the game.

As the Englishmen went to shake his opponent's hand, Anderson whispered something in his ear that appeared to upset Cullen. Cameras showed Cullen saying "what are you talking about?" to Anderson, seemingly confused at the Scotsman's accusation.

Their disagreement lasted for several seconds before Anderson walked off the stage, with Cullen following him shortly afterwards after enjoying his win in front of the packed crowd. After the match, Cullen revealed exactly what was said in their heated bust-up.

“For want of a better expression, he called me a cheat,” Cullen told DAZN. “Gary was saying ‘I know what I did’, I said I don’t know what I did. I did absolutely nothing wrong.

"I’ve never had an issue with Gary in the past. I’ve done absolutely nothing wrong, my conscience is clear. I don’t know what it was. I said ‘watch every camera back you’ve got’. I don’t know whether it was the heat of the moment.

“We all do stupid things in the heat of the moment. I’m a lot of things but I’m not a cheat. I’ve got a lot of respect for Gary, he’s a great ambassador for the sport but I think he let himself down a bit tonight."

Cullen didn't let the clash with Anderson upset him as he went on to defeat Peter Wright and Michael van Gerwen to clinch victory in Rotterdam. The Rockstar defied a seven-point gap in the averages to beat MVG in the final and take home his first outright Premier League victory.

It moved him up to fourth in the table, just above former world champion Gerwyn Price who failed to make it through to the semi-finals once again after defeat to compatriot Jonny Clayton. But Cullen wasn't worried about that as he toasted an important win.

"It's great to get the win, but there's nothing better than playing a Dutchman in their back yard," Cullen said. "Especially as well to get the five points tonight, I was struggling a bit at the bottom of the table, but I'm back up there now and I'm back.

"The Premier League is tough. You're trying to pick games where there's a certain two points, but there's never a certain two points. It's the best eight players in the world on form. If it was the old format I think I would have been struggling, this format has really helped me out and you can see what a win on the night does. I've got five points and I'm in the top four, so it's all good."

Van Gerwen remains top of the table ahead of week eight in Birmingham next Thursday.
