Joe Montana Advises Tom Brady To End His Career With Patriots

For those who don’t think it’s possible for Tom Brady to leave the New England Patriots, look no further than Joe Montana — who serves as a prime example that no NFL player is untouchable.

Montana led the San Francisco 49ers to four Super Bowl championships between the 1981 and ’89 seasons while capturing a pair of MVP awards. But injuries sidelined him for all but one game during the 1990 and ’91 seasons, and by the time he was healthy, the 49ers had made up their minds.

That Steve Young, not Montana, was going to continue San Francisco’s dynasty. The latter was traded to the Kansas City Chiefs in 1993, where he finished out the final two seasons of his career.

Brady, a six-time Super Bowl champion, has spent his entire career with the Patriots. But he’s slated to hit the free agent market for the first time in his career, and there is speculation going around that he could leave Foxborough.

Though a change of scenery can often benefit a legendary quarterback, as Montana showed, the 49ers legend explained to Michael Silver of NFL.com why Brady should finish his career right where it started.

“Don’t — if you don’t have to,” Montana said. “It’s a process to go through, and it takes time to get used to the team…I just can’t see how they would let him leave there, myself.”

Montana was Brady’s childhood idol; the latter grew up as a fan of the 49ers. So one has to think that if Brady heard what Montana’s words, he would listen closely. But if Brady is keen on joining another team, he can also look at Montana as inspiration, since the latter performed nicely during his two years in Kansas City.

Brady signed a two-year extension with the Patriots last offseason, but the contract was set up so he could hit free agency here in 2020. If he hits the open market, Brady will be the most sought-after free agent since Peyton Manning in 2012.

The Patriots were eliminated by the Tennessee Titans in the AFC Wild Card Round, marking the first time where Brady and co. failed to reach the AFC Championship Game in nine years.
