Manchester United dealt blow as Atletico Madrid ace Diego Godin 'on the verge' of joining Inter Milan

ATLETICO MADRID centre-back Diego Godin is reportedly close to penning a two-year deal with Inter Milan – dashing the hopes of Manchester United signing him.

SunSport revealed that the Uruguayan international was set to leave the La Liga giants having not been offered a new deal by the club.

The 32-year-old – who was chased by the Red Devils last summer – is set to become a free agent at the end of the campaign.

Jose Mourinho was believed to be enraged with the two-time Europa League winner after he pulled out of a deal to move to Old Trafford on deadline day.

He accused the player of using him and United as leverage in order to get a new deal at the Wanda Metropolitano, with Atletico chief Miguel Angel Gil Marin promising him fresh terms.

But a new offer has yet to come in, and according to Di Marzio, Godin is on the verge of joining the Nerazzurri when his contract expires.

Why are there no Premier League games on this weekend and when does it return?

Godin will sign for the Serie A side on an initial contract until 2021 – with the option for a further year at the San Siro.

Only the final details need to be ironed out, with the medical to happen in due course over the next coming weeks.

Godin will be reunited with former team-mate Miranda at the back, with both players winning the Spanish top-flight together with Atletico in 2014.

He moved to Diego Simeone's side in 2010 from Villarreal, where he has featured in over 350 games in all competitions.
