Pat Shurmur squashes Giants’ QB controversy murmurs

Daniel Jones has done everything right in preseason action — and it hasn’t done a thing to change Pat Shurmur’s mind.

The Giants coach confirmed on Friday morning that Eli Manning will be the Week 1 starter against the Cowboys on Sept. 8.

“Eli’s our starter, and we’re getting Daniel ready to play. (Jones) has done a good job in the preseason,” Shurmur told reporters. “He’s getting better and he’s going to continue to do that, so that at whatever time we need him to play, he’ll be ready.”

Jones has surpassed all expectations in his three preseason performances, going 25-of-30 for 369 yards and two touchdowns in the Giants’ three wins over the Jets, Bears and Bengals. Shurmur was effusive in his praise of the Duke rookie after the Giants’ victory in Cincinnati on Thursday night.

“He just has a feel for playing the position,” Shurmur said. “He’s steadily getting better every time he takes the field, whether it’s practice or games.”

Manning has also been impressive in limited action this preseason.
