Rangers icon Ally McCoist says Gazza in 'great place' after years battling alcohol addiction

ALLY McCoist has revealed Paul Gascoigne is now in a "great place" after years of battling alcohol addiction.

The Rangers legends have teamed up for a radio show ahead of the Euro 2020 Championships.

McCoist has admitted he had worried for his friend in recent years which has seen him undergo spells in rehab.

However, he told of his delight at seeing Gazza in such good form when he spent over an hour interviewing him for Talksport.

The England great recently appeared on the Italian version of I'm A Celebrity… Get Me Out Of Here! which was filmed in the Honduran jungle in Central America.

McCoist, 58, said: "It's the best I have seen him and the best I have heard him in years.

"He was on the Italian celebrity jungle and when I got him he was self-isolating in a hotel in Milan.

"I got him on the Zoom and I was chuffed to bits because he looked brilliant and he sounded brilliant.

"When I spoke to him I could tell he was in a great place, he was firing on all cylinders.

"I mean I was asking him questions about Gareth Southgate and he was telling me stories about the time he bought his dad a boat and all that.

"He was on brilliant form and I was delighted. It was just magic to catch up with him.

"I did some preparation beforehand and I had my questions but then I was thinking to myself 'I won't need this'.

"I think I looked at my paper once, I was just asking him a question and away he went and that was him for five or 10 minutes."

During the interview, Gascoigne, 54, joked about former England team-mate Gareth Southgate landing the national team job despite missing a crucial penalty in the Euro 1996 semi-final.

He said: "I don't get this Coisty, I need the country to help me here.

"I scored my penalty and Gareth Southgate missed his. I've ended up in rehab and he's ended up the manager of England and done a £20,000 pizza advert. What did I do wrong?

"I told Gareth that and he just laughed."

Gascoigne was forced to quit the Italian reality show after dislocating his shoulder but described it as a "great experience" and said he would like to take part in the UK version.

He spent three years with Rangers quickly becoming a fans favourite as he helped them win a record-equalling nine in a row league titles.

In his debut season, he was voted Scottish player of the year and also had memorable moments playing for England, including a goal against Scotland.

**McCoist's interview with Gascoigne is on Talksport at 7pm on Tuesday.
