Shrewd punter stings bookies for £12,000 after huge bet on his beloved 50-1 outsider

A SHREWD punter was celebrating stinging the bookies for £12,000 after landing a huge winner on his beloved 50-1 outsider.

Delighted owner Jon Pike watched in pure joy as 13-year-old Jepeck stormed through the foul Wincanton weather last Saturday.

Winless in two years, the victory was all the sweeter given bookies had written off his chances with odds of 50-1.

That was when Pike slammed down £200 each way on the horse he owned, certain the old boy still had some fight in him.

And so it proved a genius move as Jepeck, the oldest horse in the race by three years, sauntered home by six-and-a-half lengths from runner-up Blairgowrie.

Pike pocketed a winner's cheque of just under £7,000 for victory with the Anthony Honeyball-trained runner.

But he almost doubled that with his payout from the bookie.

Pike posted a photo of himself and friends holding huge bundles of cash and drinking champagne after landing the punt.

The delighted owner told the Racing Post: "I had £200 each-way at 50-1. I'll be having some party tonight.

"The bookies dismissed him and it was unfair because this ground is the secret to him. I talk about the horse a lot and particularly to the bookie I had the bet with, as I know him as a steward at Larkhill.

"He's been a fantastic horse. Everybody had written him off but Anthony had told me not to, so I'm over the moon."

As luck would have it, Jepeck wasn't the only winner Pike had on the day.

The horse actually returned an SP of 40-1, so he wisely got on before the his odds shortened.

That meant an extra £2,400 in winnings.
