Steve McClaren says Man Utd do NOT need Jadon Sancho… and should aim for Harry Kane transfer instead

STEVE McCLAREN claims Manchester United don’t need £108million Borussia Dortmund winger Jadon Sancho.

And he has urged Ole Gunnar Solskjaer to move for Tottenham striker Harry Kane instead.

United remain keen on bringing Sancho to Old Trafford this summer despite missing Dortmund’s deadline a week ago.

The Red Devils’ lack of quality in depth was clear for all to see last night as they crashed out of the Europa League to Sevilla.

And Ole Gunnar Solskjaer reportedly wants to add Sancho plus two top-quality signings to his squad this summer.

However, after seeing United squander chance after chance in their European semi-final, McClaren has questioned whether they need another tricky winger.

Indeed, the ex-England boss and Red Devils assistant is adamant Solskjaer instead needs a world-class goalscorer.

McClaren reckons an out-and-out No9 can lift United to another level.

And he has pointed at Tottenham icon Kane as the kind of hitman Solskjaer should be setting his sights on.

McClaren told Talksport: “The front four are so quick, they’re so exciting and they cause so many problems.

“Martial is a fantastic player, but in the big games when it really matters he never looks like a true goalscorer.

“They need class in that position. I don’t think Lukaku fit into what United are all about, that high intensity, and they need that.

“The manager is helpless if the club don’t back him and go for the likes of Haaland. What a perfect fit he would have been.

“I’ve seen him for Dortmund and he’s an incredible player at 20. Imagine him in the United team, that would be spot on.

“So they’re not far away but they have to spend the money and get the right players.

“I’ve seen Sancho play a lot for Dortmund and he’s very exciting, but he’s a little bit like Martial, Rashford and Greenwood, and I wonder do they really need that?

“He’s not a No9 and Martial, Rashford and Greenwood aren’t that either. You’ve got to get a fox in the box, a goalscorer and No9 and they’ve got to find one quick.

“Yes, Sancho would improve the squad, but to win big games and cups you need a No9 and you need two damn-good centre-backs.

“Haaland would have been perfect; a young talented striker, a No9 who can play under pressure – they’re difficult to find.

“Harry Kane, will they get him out of Tottenham? I doubt it very much but they need someone of that ilk.”
