Cardiff City owner Vincent Tan has paid an emotional tribute to former club icon Peter Whittingham, who passed away on Thursday at 35.

Whittingham had been in a critical condition in University of Wales Hospital after falling over at a pub in Barry. He was left fighting for his life on life support for 12 days in hospital after the tragic accident but the doctors said there was no hope. His pregnany wife Amanda was at his bedside when he passed.  

Tan – who became owner of Cardiff City in 2010 – said he was ‘profoundly saddened’ by the news of his passing.

Cardiff City owner Vincent Tan has paid an emotional tribute to Whittingham 

‘I have been profoundly saddened by yesterday’s terrible news,’ he said.

‘I found Peter to be the most humble of men, notwithstanding the fact that he was one of our very best and most naturally able footballers. 

‘We were blessed with his talent at Cardiff City. Peter helped inspire a generation of young Cardiff City fans and will continue to do so.

Whittingham featured for the Bluebirds for 10 years and made over 450 appearances

Cardiff City released a statement that read: ‘We are heartbroken. The news of Peter’s sudden and untimely passing has shaken us to our very foundation.

‘Our love goes out to his wife Amanda, their young son and family. They are at the forefront of our thoughts and, on their behalf, we ask for their privacy to be respected at this unfathomably cruel and difficult time.’

Tributes have been flooding in for the midfielder who played for the Bluebirds for 10 years before leaving for Blackburn in 2018. 

Former manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer paid tribute to Whittingham and hailed him ‘an incredible human being’, whilst ex-teammates Aaron Ramsey, Michael Chopra and Jay Boothroyd all remembered Whittingham with touching tributes.
