Tottenham can win league with Conte but must keep manager out of PSG's clutches with transfer spree, warns Ravanelli

TOTTENHAM can WIN the Premier League under Antonio Conte if they back him in the transfer market, says Fabrizio Ravanelli.

The North Londoners’ last piece of silverware came way back in the 2008 League Cup.

Tottenham sit fifth in the table, two points behind Arsenal and 22 off leaders City with four games to go.

However, Ravanelli reckons his pal and compatriot will secure Champions League football for 2022-23, when an overhaul of the squad from back to front is needed.

And then the elite and experienced manager will be able to challenge Manchester City and Liverpool at the top as early as next season.

The Italian legend, 53, told SunSport: “I believe he has been doing very well at Tottenham but when a coach, especially Conte, gets to a team, he needs time.

“I'm pretty sure he can make tremendous progress and achieve exactly what he has in mind.

“Tottenham has always been missing something – they never really manage to take that necessary step forward in quality.

“They have had a good mentality but it's not been effective in getting the results they want.

“Now with Conte and Fabio Paratici, they will be able to make the right choices to give them the right identity to win.

“They will be able to then possibly win the Premier League in this way. Next year will be the turning point.”

Ravanelli continued: “This year they have less chance than Arsenal [to get top four] but knowing Conte, in these moments, he always wins duels.

“He is so focused and so determined and I'm pretty sure they will finish fourth and get into the Champions League.

“As for winning the Premier League next year, they will have to fight hard. We cannot forget Manchester City and Liverpool.

“Tottenham have got seven or eight excellent players.

“They need to focus on the defence because that is their main weakness.

“They would also need to strengthen the midfield with new signings and sign a new striker to play alongside Harry Kane.

“Kane is the best but he is not enough so they will need to strengthen there next season. It won't be easy.”

Ravanelli and Conte were team-mates in the 1990s with Juventus and Italy – winning Serie A and the Champions League in consecutive years, before the former joined Middlesbrough.

Conte is currently the only Italian manager in the Premier League – despite the success enjoyed by the likes of Roberto Mancini, Carlo Ancelotti and Claudio Ranieri.

Manchester United have many players who are not fit to wear the shirt…the whole defence should be changed completely

But reports suggest that number could drop to zero if Paris Saint-Germain appoint Conte to replace Mauricio Pochettino at the Parc des Princes.

However, earlier this season while available following his Inter Milan exit, the ex-Chelsea boss was heavily linked with taking the Manchester United gig.

And Ravanelli reckons it would have been a major success at Old Trafford – again if Conte could work his magic in the market and rip up the defence.

The Boro icon, speaking on behalf of Bitget, Juventus’ official crypto exchange partner, added: “If Conte had had the possibility to work with the Manchester United players, certainly it would have been easier for him to achieve certain results.

“United have many players who are not fit to wear the shirt or up to the expectation of winning the Premier League and Champions League. There should be some turnover of players.

“I don't want to be nasty but honest. Without naming specific players, the whole defence should be changed completely. It needs radical change.

“I truly believe with Erik ten Hag, a new cycle is about to start. He did really well at Ajax and enjoyed remarkable results.

“He has always given great value to young players. If he starts working with the young players who understand what it means to play for United, they can make the difference and improve.”
