Ana Maria Marković was born in Split, Croatia, and moved with her family to Switzerland aged 12, growing up in Zürich.
She began playing football at 14 after becoming inspired by the growth of women's football.
While in Switzerland she featured for U21 squad at FC Zurich for three seasons before making the move to Grasshopper.
She caught the eye of the Croatian Football Federation while playing for Grasshopper and was then called up to play for the Croatia national team.

In an interview with 20min in 2022, she said: "Modric is definitely a great role model for me. He is a world footballer and represents Croatia.
"There are many good players among the women, such as (Ramona) Bachmann but my absolute favourite player is Cristiano Ronaldo because he's just so disciplined.
"I think it's super important that you give your all in sport and have a good mindset like him."
On March 6, 2023, Markovic revealed that she has been forced to "say goodbye to football for a long time".
The forward player had suffered a nasty-looking knee injury while in action for Grasshopper.
She shared two photos of the agony incident on Instagram, and wrote: "I don't know where to start…
"Unfortunately I got injured at the last game and will now have to say goodbye to football for a long time.
"It hurts so much and still can not believe it.
"All who know me, know that I have a very strong personality and that I will come back even stronger…
"Thank you all for the support… I will need it in the next few months even more."
