Fans of All Creatures Great and Small have just been treated to the second series of Channel 5’s easy-watching show which details the life of James Herriot (Nicholas Ralph) as he makes a name for himself as one of the most famous veterinary surgeons while getting to know the villagers, all within the setting of the Yorkshire Dales. The second series saw James and Helen (Rachel Shenton) finally starting a romance, which actress Rachel discussed as she hinted about their future.
“James and Helen tentatively step towards each other in season two, with little expectations and that’s really indicative of the people they are,” she explained.
In series two, James turned down a prestigious role in Glasgow so he could stay with Helen.
By the end, he had finally plucked up the courage to propose to her and the two were overjoyed at their engagement.
Speaking to Viewties Magazine, Rachel explained how her working relationship with Nicholas helps with their on-screen chemistry.
The 33-year-old shared: “Nick is absolutely brilliant! There’s such an easiness to him.
“We both auditioned together in 2019 and got on very well from the start.
“We laugh a lot, which I think helps the scenes!”
All Creatures Great and Small has quickly become one of the most popular programmes on Channel 5.
“Aside from the scripts being brilliantly crafted and full to the brim of humility and love, All Creatures aired at a time when the world felt particularly cruel, so it was a lovely reminder of what humanity is,” Rachel described as she talked about the show’s popularity.
She added: “The show is about community and nature, and I don’t think that’s ever felt more relevant.”
The period drama brings to life the books written by real-life veterinary surgeon James after he moved to the Dales to care for the farm animals and pets of the locals.
The second series was set in 1938, with the impending Second World War leaving fans wondering what future instalments will have in store as they predict the comforting nature of the show might come to an abrupt end.
It will come as no shock that a season three is likely to be on the cards.
Although the network hasn’t officially confirmed a date, showrunner Ben Vanstone hinted there would be more to come.
Speaking to media recently, Vanstone said: “Yes, I think we are looking forward to a third series. I don’t think that’s a surprise.
“I think that when we started the show, we had in mind arcs for these characters that took them across a number of series and initially, it was kind of four series.
“But everything in this show plays out slower than you think it would.
“So yeah, there’s plenty more to come. We’ll see what all the stakeholders say.”
There will also be a Christmas special which is due to air later this year.
